Nostalgia

What do you miss the most that has been made obsolete with our modern times? Personally, I yearn for typewriters; letters sealed with wax, the old rotary phones, the fan and how it was used to flirt and of course the corset.

I miss vinyl records, even if they sounded scratchy. I miss drive in movie theatres, they are almost non existent now. I miss childhood innocence and imagination, when we played with household items like pots and pans...my nieces and nephews have their heads stuck in techno gadgets instead of books. I miss the old fashioned popcorn my Mom used to make over the stove, where the aluminum used to rise up. And I miss being a kid, life was carefree and easier then.

Those old 1950 dial phones. I like the weight of it.

I miss my 8 tracks. I want to find one again. I always see the tapes at thrift stores.

Oooh...I like ALL the things that you mentioned here although I can't imagine walking around in a corset. I'm certain my husband would love it, though! I have one of those old black typewriters in my living room. It belonged to my husband's grandfather. And I like those old fans that were made during WWII.
I wish wearing stylish hats would come back in style. Oh, an I'm definitely with Vivian on drive in movies. Now those were fun!

Handwritten letters. I wrote one yesterday for my mum, but they are getting scarcer per day, we all depend mostly on e-mail.

Greetings from London.

I was going to say "handwritten letters" too. And women in long beautiful dresses (maybe not the corset....I like to breathe.)

I miss handwritten letters, old fashioned Xmas where the family didn't have to go in debt to buy Jr. a present. I miss the dickie dee man driving through the neighbourhood, hearing him ring the bell, running through the house scraping up enough change to buy an ice cream treat right at your front door.
Viv, we have a drive-in 10 minutes away if you want to come visit. ;)

I miss vinyl record albums, I miss getting up to go and flip them over when one side would finish. I miss their large and often beautiful covers, which I would read like a book, I miss they warm way they sounded, even with their occasional pops and cracks.

I miss the way men used to dress in the 30's and 40's. I wasn't around then, but I've seen pictures and it looked lovely. Hats, overcoats... And, I miss the beauty of the old cars. Today's car designs leave me cold.

Things not made out of plastic:
marble, porcelain, stonemasonry, handmade glass, fine woodwork.
Craftsmanship.
That exquisite, hand-hewn craftsmanship, arduously learned as an art and passed down through generations, performed with pride and respect and a bit of awe.
That which we have lost as things have become mass-produced.

Oooo, yes, corsets. Wonderful for short stints. I would have liked to travel by horse and cart instead of cars. Old fashioned good manners would be nice too. Thanks for dropping by my blog.

Hi Yoli! Personally i would hate to wear a corset! Even if it looks good! But I love the fact, that my mother still writes long letters! So few letterwriters left... But, thank God we now have the blogs!
Thankyou for leaving such a nice comment on mine! I will go and have closer look at your blog now.

I miss those old phones where you had to put your finger in the number you wanted and spin it all the way around...

Loved that feeling!

Thanks for the memories,

Oh, I am SO nostalgic for typewriters! The sound of the typewriter. The feel of hitting the keys. We had a Royal typewriter that smelled like dust and oil. And the onion skin paper. I loved that too. Although the typewriter would make blogging more difficult.

I am sure I am nostalgic for many more things, some things I've never used as a habit (like a corset or stockings with garters or white gloves) but part of my nostalgia is for times I never lived in.

hmm..come to think of it..I agree on that typewritter too. It reminded me of the time when I was ..ahem..younger, learning typing the old fashioned way on that old fashioned typewritter. I wonder if anyone learns typing anymore, or they just pick up typing from the computer. The first image of a corset is stunning..but I seriously doubt if I could sqeeze into one haha..hope you have a great week ahead :D

Yoli, lovely post. Seriously we miss too many things in life rite?. I personally miss my good old days playing in the streets...bathing in the pond near my grandparent's place, the innocence of childhood..people have become more selfish in this fast paced lifestyle.. i miss the kinda hospitality ppl show to one another...my stamp book album which i think is totally unknown thing for kids of this generation. List goes on girl!!! life was much better without these technological advancement. :-)

I miss large stand alone movie theaters with big screens (no multiplexes), and concession stands that did not cost a fortune; The pops and scratches when listening to vinyl LPs; Getting handwritten letters and greeting cards in the mail; Drugstores with ice cream counters and old style diners.

I miss the silence we had in public before cell phones rang in custom tones and everyone walked around in stride with others but talked to someone else. I miss that bit of anonymity we clung to without having to hear someone have a bitter argument with a spouse as though they were enclosed in a room alone. I hate listening to these conversations! Pet peeve!

hi yoli, i started this comment yesterday while at work with rachel but i had to shut down the computer before i could finish my comment. i had decided to join rachel at work for her 8 hour shift so i could have a little on-line time to visit everyone without the pressure of connection issues.

oh gosh i would need to think on this.. the images you have here make me miss things i didn't even know i missed!! i miss real carnivals, penny candy, easter hats, my mom. sigh...i miss so much. it seems to be a condition of aging to reflect and compare, finding the current state of affairs wanting for the better days.

you know i love you my yoli :)

i miss old victrola gramophones with their big brass horns and the clippity-clop of horse & carriages and formal dances where you'd actually dance with a partner (and have a dance card.) oh, and hats, all different kinds of hats, and grande old train stations with the loud hiss of steam trains and deluxe railway cars.

(and clipper ships!)

Hmmm... I love the look of corsets, though I would hate to see how my muffin top would bulge out of the bottom.

I'd bring back Super 8 filmmaking. I really appreciate the grainy look and feel that has yeteryear written all over it.

BTW - if you can fence, you can definitely run. Half of the challenge is just mental. I got my start almost 3 years ago when I signed up to run a local 5k. I hated running up until that pt. You can download a series called "Couch to 5K" from iTunes that can walk you through training. I've never done it but I hear it's great. Best wishes!

I miss old rotary phones too.
I loved that they were so groovy colour wise, those olive green and gold ones.
I liked the old record players that were contained in a big old cabinet.
Also the big wooden tv's that were furniture in themselves!!!

this blog gets prettier and prettier, Y, just like you :)

I'd like to borrow that header-lady's lipstick, so chic, as I sit here in sweats and crappy chapstick...

Oh, and I miss phones with a rotary dial. Something about the clickclickclick was so satisfying. And phonebooths. Where have all the phonebooths gone?

Relyn Lawson said...

Oh my! What a fabulous post, a marvelous question. I miss vinyl records like vivian. I miss the clickety-click-sort-of-buzz of a rotary phone. I miss the ugly vinyl faux leather sofa my grandpa had and the way my legs would get so stuck in the summer. Car upholstery used to be made out of the same stuff. I miss men in hats, although that was really not something I remember. Funny how you can miss something you never had, isn't it? Oh. I could keep on going. I think I may borrow your post idea.

I miss small simple weddings that didn't cost a fortune where nobody needed a "wedding planner". I also miss quilts on the guestroom bed that your real live grandma made for you and you didn't buy at an antique store.

How interesting. You got me thinking and what I miss are the SOUNDS of the clackety typewriter and the rotary phone as it reset itself after each dial. When we received parcels from Britain, all wrapped in brown paper and twine, the knots would be sealed with bright shiny red gobs of wax. Slitting the cellophane on a new record and sliding it out for the first time, all shiny and unscratched. I could go on...... :)
Cheers, Shelagh

I miss l/p records the new things are not the same, good manners, and hand written letters that come by the postman.
I sure am glad I didn'tlive when those corests were considered part of the garments one hads to wear. It looks like torture to me.
