I used to attend Naropa University, which was founded by this awesome Buddhist monk from Tibet, Chögyam Trungpa...he had a lot of good things to say about fear in his book "Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior." I found an excerpt here:

I used to be one of the birds at the back of the line. Too scared to take the lead I guess.
